Puppy Placement Process
Finding the Right Fit
At Portside, we believe the placement process is just as important as how we raise our puppies. A well-matched puppy and family create the foundation for a lifetime of happiness together. That’s why we don’t rely on “first pick” or looks alone. Instead, we take time to truly understand each puppy’s temperament, structure, and personality, and then carefully match them with the home where they will thrive.
Our goal is simple: Every Portside puppy should leave us with the confidence, support, and the right environment to grow into the best version of themselves, whether that’s as a beloved family companion, a performance partner, or a show prospect.
Why We Don’t Do First Pick
We don’t allow “first pick” or picking puppies at random. Families often fall in love with a color or a face, but the truth is the right match is about temperament, energy level, and structure. Our placement process makes sure every family gets the puppy best suited for their lifestyle and goals.
Temperament Testing
At around seven weeks old, each puppy participates in Temperament Testing with respected, professional trainers. This test gives us a clear picture of each puppy’s personality, drive, and natural tendencies, which helps us match them to the right type of home and family.
During the evaluation, puppies are gently guided through a series of exercises that measure important traits.
There are many effective ways to evaluate puppies, and depending on the litter or individual needs, our approach may look a little different each time. What remains the same is our commitment to understanding each puppy’s unique personality so we can place them where they’ll truly thrive.
Conformation Evaluations
Conformation is the way a puppy’s structure, movement, and overall appearance align with the breed standard. As the puppies develop, we regularly watch them move and stack them to feel how their bodies are growing and coming together.
At around seven weeks, we will have a trusted mentor take a closer look at balance, movement, and expression to see which puppies show strong potential for the show ring. Others may be better suited as companions or in performance homes. Every puppy is valued. This process simply helps us place them where their strengths will shine.
When it comes time to make placements, we will consider every piece of the picture. Temperament tests, conformation evaluations, and our own daily observations of each puppy all play a role. We also take into account a family’s preferences and goals, such as whether they’re looking for a show prospect, a performance partner, or a beloved companion.
By blending these factors together, we’re able to thoughtfully pair each puppy with the home where they’ll be the best fit. It’s not just about sending puppies to families; it’s about creating the right match so both puppy and family can thrive together.
The Matching Process
Families will be notified of their match shortly after the evaluations are complete. By this point, we’ve gathered everything we need to make thoughtful, confident placement decisions.
Puppies go to their forever homes between 8–10 weeks of age, depending on the individual litter. This ensures every puppy is not only matched with care, but also fully prepared to begin their new life.
