Poodle History

The Standard Poodle is the breed’s original form. A true working dog with roots tracing back hundreds of years.

Developed in Germany, where it was called the Pudel (“to splash”), the Standard Poodle was bred as a water retriever, known for its intelligence, strength, and love of swimming. Its dense, curly coat protected it from cold water, while the traditional “Poodle clip” was designed for function keeping vital areas insulated and limbs free for movement in the water.

Although Germany is the breed’s birthplace, France refined and popularized the Poodle, earning it the title of France’s national dog. Over time, smaller versions were bred for other roles.

Recognized by both the American Kennel Club (AKC) and the United Kennel Club (UKC), the Standard Poodle has evolved from a skilled retriever to an exceptional companion and performance dog.

Today, they excel in obedience, agility, water sports, and so much more. Carrying on its proud heritage as one of the most intelligent and versatile breeds in the world.
